Synthpop Nonstop is about the future of popular music and the machines that created it.
Early ’60s synthesizers were walls of knobs and sockets and sprawling wires painstakingly coaxed into making musical sounds. They were expensive and delicate, accessible to few musicians, and mainly heard in film soundtracks. The introduction of portable mass market machines in the late ’70s coincided with the collapse of punk and disco, making space for a new DIY synth-driven sound that ushered in the MTV era and refashioned popular music forever. Out of fashion in the ’90s, it re-emerged within EDM. Today synth-pop goes by many names and its influence is felt across genres.
